Mayfield best for job duties

Published Sunday, November 1, 2009

Seven candidates for sheriff want your vote Tuesday, all are qualified lawmen, but only one is the best fit.

The special election is more than simply picking the best lawman or the nicest guy.

What makes a great sheriff, however, is a rare combination of knowledge and leadership. The sheriff runs an office with a more than $3 million annual budget and leads a team of approximately 70 employees.

That’s a huge responsibility for both our public safety and stewardship of taxpayer money.

In carefully interviewing nearly all the candidates (Roosevelt Owens would not return our calls), reading their campaign materials and studying their histories, we feel strongly that the single best, most experienced leader on the ballot is Charles R. “Chuck” Mayfield.

Mayfield’s diverse experience makes him stand out among a field of excellent candidates. He brings more than a quarter century of real world experience in everything from working some of the largest narcotics busts in the area to handling youth court issues with great sensitivity.

He stands head and shoulders above other qualified lawmen when it comes to communication, understanding of budgetary issues, leadership ability and attacking crime with 21st century ideas.

Mayfield, however, will only be as good as the staff he hires. And some of the men running alongside him bring the best, specialized qualities to the table.

It has us thinking of a “dream team” of sorts.

Our dream team would include:

4 Randy Freeman in charge of patrol deputies.

4 Craig Godbold in charge of investigations and a revived canine unit.

4 Ray Brown leading a special gang task force and focusing on reaching out to juveniles before the crimes are committed.

That team, in our minds, puts each person in the area in which they have the greatest strength.

We hope the county will support the person who we believe has the best combination of experience, personality and leadership. Mayfield is the clear choice.

Regardless of whom you choose, however, we hope you’ll exercise your right to vote on Tuesday.

i must agree he is the most qualified indivisual in the race.people forget about who you like and you don't like. look at the resume.he is a proven leader.he has been in a position of leadership the majority of his lawenforcement career. ND you got it right this time.

I am very proud of the Democrat for making this endorsement and you have gained my respect. I apologize for my suggestion earlier in the week that you could be "bought" like many other's in this community. You are totally correct in your assessment of the candidates and your suggestions for the dream team are very interesting. Thank you so much for making a stand in this very important race. Chuck is by far the strongest and most well rounded candidate.

Chuck Mayfield is by far the best candidate. Vote for the BEST and you'll see the difference a good sheriff can make.

And he even won the Chili contest!

The democrat did not endorse Ronny Brown in 2003, he won and was a great sheriff.
RANDY FREEMAN FOR SHERIFF!

west, you shouldn't feel bitter since the Democrat was kind enough to offer Freeman a position in charge of patrol deputies. Personally, I'd like to see the Democrat become more inclusive and offer the position of Chief of Backstabbing Investigations to still another candidate. Wouldn't that make for one big happy family?

:)

MY JAW DROPPED WHEN i READ this blatant endorsement just as it has done in the past when this and other news media does the same. I believe giving free endorsement to one particular canidate is totally wrong. It has to be free because there's another candidate that would have paid the highest price for it, and Kevin, I won't believe you can be bought.

I'm with west except I'll vote for Godbold. He doesn't believe votes should be bought. He believes his past work ethics should win the office. And his ethics so proudly, so unselflessly, roars louder than all the others. But that doesn't count with a lot of voters in Natchez and that is a shame. Greatness is only visible after the fact. I will never say my vote did not count if he should happen to lose b/c I did vote for the best candidate.

Destiny,
You don't know what your talking about. It is a common practice for a newspaper to do an endorsement of the candidate of their choice. They do this in every election without getting paid for it. They did their research and interviewed each candidate to come to this conclusion. You are just upset that it isn't the candidate you are backing. Apparently they did a good job because they did endorse the best one!

The Democrat hit all the aspects of a good sheriff. Experience on patrol, special task units, metro, in the jail, administration, and with juvenile justice. Chuck is the only candidate that has it all.

Sorry,<<<<welcome to the jungle>>>>>>Since I don't live in the jungle like you do it is considered uncouth practice in many places. I would like to hope Natchez Democrat rises above all others. It's very apparent that Mr. Mayfield is your choice. Why I'll even take a guess that he's a relative of your's. I have lived in Natchez 40 years. I never heard the name Chuck Mayfield at any time until this election.
There have been numerous aricles and pictures of Godbold in the ND which i have read and I have taken the time and effort to study other areas of his life also. That's what I do when I vote for someone. There are a couple of others I pondered over but my decision was made with Godbold. No I am not related to him. I have read and studied about him. That's the extent of my relationship with him. I can only derive at the conclusion that you must be kin and afraid Mr. Mayfield might not make it for you to be so arrogantly against my vote. Instead of attacking me why not state your reasons and ask me to change my mind. Thats what a reasonable person would do. Instead you definitely made me realize I chose the better of the two men to be sheriff. Thank you for that.

Destiny,
I don't live in the jungle but you sound like you do. And I'm not kin to Chuck Mayfield but if you've been involved in the community, you would have heard about him. He's been a big part of the Natchez community for years. You should check him out on his website if you're not familiar with him www.mayfieldforsheriff.

If you have been around during any kind of election process even national ones, you would know that newspapers all over the country do endorsements of candidates. I wasn't attacking you, just letting you know you're not correct in attacking the Natchez Democrat for their endorsement. How can you think you've researched Goldbold so much and don't even know his first name in your other post from another article?

The editor has his opinion like everyone else that is his right. Even though I disagree.I would like the editor to look back in the ND archives. Ray Brown has been Your/ND Citizen of the year or Unsung Hero. One of them I can't recall but I remember reading the artical.I know you thought highly of him then.Of all the canidates Ray Brown is the right choice for this position.I hope that after Ray wins you be as fair as he will be when you write your articals on him.

Chuck is the man for the job ... He has the experience, knowledge, integrity and dedication to handle Adams County.... Integrity is lacking in politics today... But not with Chuck. I went to school and graduate with him... He is dedicated to his obligations whether it be his family, friends, job or Adams County.... He'll be on top of it....whatever the need....

GOOOOOOOO Chuck... Will check with you Tuesday night....

For those out there who are not related to, not kin to, not promised a job, etc. and still dont know who should be sheriff, please forget who went to school, who has a degree, who has a bunch of certificates and who has money, Randy Freeman is experienced and will need no briefing on how to run the ACSO. Ronny Brown was smack in the middle of one of the best Administrations the ACSO has ever had. RANDY FREEMAN was right there with him and will make sure all of his dreams are completed and continued. VOTE RANDY FREEMAN

Destiny- "Vote for Greg Godbold". Yeah you did your research.. NOT. If you ACTUALLY did research on the candidates like you said, then you would have seen old and new articles on Chuck's website of him. Never heard of him? Because you didn't look

Destiny, darling, u have been very "sheltered" or uninformed if u have not heard the name of "Chuck Mayfield" until now. In addition, he does not have any living relatives in Natchez..... His support comes from people who are informed and know of all his accomplishments over the last 25 years. Therein lies the reason that he is the logical and strongest candidate. If u r going to vote.....at least attempt to know the facts, not just vote on emotion.

Chuck Mayfield for Sheriff!

Posted by Lemone (anonymous) on November 2, 2009 at 9:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

(repeated on another blog for a reason)
On the eve of the election, It is my hope that all citizens of Adams County take a good look at each of the candidates --- their education, experience, longevity, and especially their track record. Look at their actions --- did they start going to church right before the election, or have they been attending for many years? Did they start "being professional" just before the election, or have they been treating the citizens of our county with respect during their tenure as patrolman, investigator, or other? Are they "shacking up" or married? Have they given to the community in the form of community service? volunteerism? or just what they were PAID to do. These questions matter!! These actions define the man/woman as who they truly are, and not what they want you to THINK they are. These actions separate the true leaders from the fakes. In these turbulent times, Adams County needs a real leader. Not someone tagging on coat tails. Not someone who has just been 'nice' to everyone. Not someone who is gruff and tough and thinks that intimidation is power (imagine a Sheriff like that!). Adams County needs someone who can lead us through the tough times ahead -- Someone who is strong, level-headed, experienced, community-oriented, and capable. There is only one name that can fill those shoes. ONLY ONE! It is an easy choice if you look at the facts. Chuck Mayfield is the ONLY person in this race who qualifies as a true leader in every aspect of his life. If you will look at the history of each candidate, I think you will agree.

Posted by Big_Red16 (anonymous) on November 3, 2009 at 1:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Lemone you are right there really is only one choice if you look at all the facts. But the ONLY ONE is RAY BROWN.That is the RIGHT choice!!!

Posted by Yeahuhuh (anonymous) on November 3, 2009 at 8:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I cannot imagine anyone NOT having heard of Chuck. He was involved at very high levels locally for many years.

It was not until the Brown election that he was replaced by someone with less experience, and that for whatever reasons.

When he changed jobs he stuck with this community and served without being in so much of a punitive role. A lot of law enforcement officers would have thrown up their hands and sought employment elsewhere. But Chuck stuck with this town.

He is not my relative and will not employ me in any way. He is just the most qualified.
