Only bad vote is one you don't cast

Published Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Months of shaking hands, putting up signs and talking about the issues all comes to a head today.

When 2009 first began, none of us dreamed we would be selecting a new sheriff. The unexpected death of Sheriff Ronny Brown took the county by surprise.

His death left a hole in our collective hearts, but also a hole in our system of law enforcement.

Today voters head to the polls to make their selections for filling the position of Adams County sheriff.

While no one will replace Brown, for he was a unique individual, several of the men running possess some of Brown’s greatest traits, especially his care for people from all walks of life.

The field of candidates is a diverse one, but all candidates have one great thing in common — a desire to protect and serve for the common good of the county.

Since that’s the case any of the men on the ballot can do the basics of the job. That means it’s a matter of voters choosing the absolute best candidate who they feel can lead the sheriff’s office to excellence. Many of you made up your mind months ago on which candidate you’ll choose.

But if you’re still undecided, please don’t just avoid voting altogether. Spend a few minutes reading up on the candidates. We’ve created a special place on our Web site where you can see complete coverage of the race including the candidate’s own platforms.

To find this area, simply go to natchezdemocrat.com and click on the large sheriff’s badge link at the top right of the page.

The only bad vote today is the vote not cast.

Please make sure you head to the polls and exercise your choice for the man who will lead the men and women who keep our community safe.

......and please, don't think your candidate is the hands down winner, or a total loser, and your vote won't make a difference...go VOTE!!

It only takes a few minutes; you walk in, sign up, vote, and you're gone....that's it...no sweat, an 18 year old can do it.

Honestly, if you are not going to vote the same as me, I'd just as soon you stay at home.

Later, you can complain about it right here.

Voting is a right and privledge many countries don't have.
Get out and vote for the candidate of your choice......

I guess this is the paper's endorsement of no one?

Old Grand dad's honesty is refreshing.

I think there are plenty of bad votes. Voting your gut instinct can be very bad, especially if you have not done your homework on the candidates.

A lot of candidates pander to your fears or try to win pretty much solely by saturating the media. I don't think those candidates make good public servants in any election.

In a democracy whoever is most popular after an honest and open good long time to consider is the ultimate best choice. Very few qualifications could enable a man to claim that his qualifications are more important than the people's support from day one. You just have to wonder about candidates who don't agree with that thought.

Go vote but only pull that lever if you have a clear idea of who you are supporting!

Ooops, just saw that the paper already endorsed Chuck!

Yeahuhuh, the DEB suprised me by endorsing Chuck. I thought they would wait until the runoff before they endorsed anyone.

Saying that its important for folks to vote (no matter for who) seems to ring less logical with each passing election. Why add competition to your own vote?

I couldn't disagree more. If you don't know who or what you are voting for, stay home. If you haven't found out any info about the candidate then you don't need to be voting. This push for people to get out and vote just to be voting is crazy. The elections have been turned into a popularity contest.

.... and you don't even have to take the time to show a state id!
