Sun to shine on polls
Published Tuesday, November 3, 2009
NATCHEZ — Sunny with temperatures in the mid-70s is exactly the weather voters like.
That weather combined with a high-interest sheriff’s race should translate into good numbers at the polls, election commissioner Catherine Meng said Monday.
Polling places open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. today.
Seven candidates vying for sheriff and a non-binding referendum about recreation are all that is on the ballot for the special election.

Workers take voting machines out of the Adams County Courthouse to deliver them to the various county precincts Monday.
Elections commissioners worked Monday to get ballot boxes and machines prepared at 20 polling places.
Voters must vote in the precinct in which they currently live, Meng said. Even those who have moved recently must visit the new polling place and vote affidavit.
Affidavit and absentee ballots will be counted Wednesday. All absentee ballots were due by 5 p.m. Monday, and Circuit Clerk Eddie Walker said 630 had been completed.
All poll workers will have an address book for their precinct, and can assist those confused about where they should be voting.
Candidates for sheriff are, Ray Brown, Cliff Cox, Randy Freeman, Craig Godbold, Chuck Mayfield, Roosevelt Owens and Greg Wisner.
Voters will be asked to vote “yes” or “no” on the following referendum, “Do you favor the creation of a consolidated countywide recreation program to be funded by a bond and/or other financial device in an amount to be determined but not to exceed $5,450,000?”
Poll workers will begin tallying results when the polls close. For complete election returns as they come in, visit www.natchezdemocrat.com.
