Daycare owner sentenced for mail fraud
Published Friday, November 6, 2009
FERRIDAY — A Ferriday daycare owner was sentenced to more than three years prison for defrauding the federal government of more than $220,000.
U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell handed down the sentence of 37 months Thursday to Pamela Gorden, 50.
Gorden, who owned and operated Gorden’s Daycare and Learning Center, pleaded guilty to the charge of one count mail fraud in late June. She has owned the center since 1990.
She had reportedly submitted fraudulent invoices to the Child Care Assistance Program.
The total reported loss due to the fraud was $220,697.49.
As part of her sentencing, the court will require Gorden to make full restitution.
The defrauded parties in the case include the State of Louisiana Department of Social Services’ Office of Family Support’s Child Care Assistance Program, which is funded by a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant.
“The child care assistance program helps low-income families to pay for child care while working, looking for work, attending school or training,” U.S. Attorney Donald Washington said in a news release.
“When someone submits false claims for payments of child care that was not provided, this reduces the funds available to provide assistance to the families and children of Louisiana who need this service.
“This office will continue to prosecute and seek maximum punishment for anyone who abuses programs designed to protect the best interests of our families and children.”

Wow it never ceases to amaze me as to what people will and won't do. I applied for state assistant and they denied me.I was honest and couldn't get assistant they say because of my income , which is not that much I don't know what kind of income sale they use

I know what you're feeling, shygirl. I met the same problem. My eldest child's SS from her deceased dad was too much...heck, it wasn't enough to keep a dog in Kibbles and Bits all month long....but it was enough to prevent us from getting any kind of assistance. That's OK. We made it and today we don't need that help (knock on wood). I just hate to see women go to work only to pay it all to child care. Here's where the second job comes into play...what a nightmarish cycle.
This Pamela woman ticks me off. She pocketed the extra state cash while me and shygirl were denied day care. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Another side to this is how she defrauded her own employees.
Wish some of them would comment, since the article did not elaborate the full depth of what happened.

Yes state of natchez i have friends who worked for her and was very dissatified because she didnt pay them for there work because their children attended the daycare. She preyed on welfare workers. They were scared cause she had the upper hand on their temporary livelihood. She always tried to make it seem she was trying to help them but all the time she was only continuing her scamming ways that have finally caught up with her. My heart goes out to her cause apparently she has a problem.
