What is this?
Is the money well spent?
Published Friday, October 30, 2009
As of Tuesday seven campaigns for Adams County sheriff had gathered $198,900 in financial contributions.
We know quite a few local charities that would clamor for that kind of money.
Where does all the sheriff’s race money go? All over.
Mainly, candidates spend money on print, TV and radio advertisements, billboards and signs and printed materials.
But other dollars went to fund a phone poll to gauge support for a candidate, for T-shirts and for professional photography.
The total spending seems over-the-top, but that’s politics. From the smallest county race to the presidential race our country donates, spends and needs money for elections.
But does money buy votes? Maybe. Maybe not.
As Election Day nears and spending climbs ever-higher voters have a responsibility to look beyond the campaign signs, T-shirts and fliers and find out the truth.
This election is not about voting for the “nice guy” or the family member. It’s about electing the best man for this job — a job that entails leadership, managing a budget, hiring and firing, administration duties and crime fighting.
It’s a shame that our community has raised nearly $200,000 for fliers and billboards while many of our non-profits sit with dry coffers. Requests from families in need are going up daily, many local agencies will tell you.
Where’s the money? Just look at the signs, it’s all around us.

It's a shame it takes that kind of money to run a campaign. The money isn't well spent and what happens with the leftovers after the campaign? Not just talking about this local election but millions were spent for the Presidential race too. All that money could help the needy instead of trying to win an election. Spending the most money doesn't buy votes!

I guess that some of the money was used on websites too. Like this one:

I'm hoping the ND will do an endorsement soon. One that is fair and unbiased. We need a qualified, educated, experienced person to be our next sheriff. Not one that is "nice and kin to most everyone in Adams County" or spends the most money!

But the money was spent in Natchez.... so it stimulated the local economy... right? I would think that as poor of shape Natchez is in the paper would be happy for anyone to spend money here, for any (legal) reason.

Tell me who is a democrat or republican in this sham of a contest? Are they all really democrats or is it a sham to get black votes cause "they" won't vote republican? Ever seen a fair election? Me neither.

Money well spent? How do you spend 100 thousand plus on a job that pays 80 thousand a year? Look at the money that has been spent, a lot was spent out of town. I don't listen to the radio anymore because of the exaggerated propaganda being broadcast by a candidate. I don't bother to look at the adds in the newspaper....same propaganda. If that wasn't enough, they even send the same crap in the mail. Who are they trying to impress? Enough is enough, you might buy the election but you can't buy respect. Oh yes, remember this election is only for a two year term. If he buys the election he will have to spend the same or more to keep it. Please people of Adams County, check out ALL the candidates before you sell YOUR sheriff's department to the highest bidder.

Yes, look at the all the candidates! Do overlook the ones being backed by political pirahas who think they still have clout (Binkey). Heard he's endorsing Freeman who hasn't even made it to a forum because he's too scared. Do we want that in a Sheriff?

I have heard for many years of the tactic of giving money to churches in this county in order to gain political support of pastors -- and their congregations.
I would very much like to hear of a pastor who is honest enough to talk about the money he was offered or given in such a situation.

Personally, I am tired of seeing the name Cox everywhere..... billboards, in my mailbox, on TV and hearing him on my answering machine. We are way past overkill and I hear that the declared amount is only a portion of the money that his family has given him......I have lost all the respect that I never had for the man. I also would like to know why someone from another state would donate 20 thou to a candidate. The reason I am hearing is very scarey for Adams county.

Who cares how much money one spends on campaigning as long as they're qualified.

Just a quick question for the Democrat reporter, staff, editorial board, whoever...:)
Could y'all please tell your readers approximately how much
each of the candidates has spent on advertising in your paper ?
If you cannot break it down per candidate (for whatever reason(s))
then how much TOTAL has been spent on advertising in the
Democrat in the Sheriff's race so far?
Could you do this after the election is over also?
Thank you for your responses (if any).
:)

Politicians....jeez, I hate those guys. Every one of them I've ever known has had an ego the size of Mt McKinley, spends many times what the job actually pays to get elected, and ends up owing a lot of favors to the few rich people who donated huge amounts to his campaign to buy influence. Just look at our present legislators in Washington. They spend millions to get $186,000 jobs...they stack up millions in "war chests". Our presidential race last year cost mucho millions to get a $400,000 a year job. And in the end, "we the people", get nothing because they don't represent us, but the corporations that bought them.
I was watching an interview on CNN the other day with Sen. Bahy, (D), Indiana. 80% of his state's democrats, the people he purportedly represents, the people who elected him to represent them, are in favor of the "public option" medicare for everyone, but there he sits talking about how he's going to side with the Republicans against a public option, but yet, support the idea of a federal mandate that every person must buy health insurance or be fined. Therefore, brining an automatic, federally mandated $50 - $60 Billon dollars to the health care providers (insurance companies) And I'm thinking, why would he vote against what his constituents want 4-1 in his state? The next thing you know, the reporter brings out the fact that maybe it's because the honorable Sen Bahy's wife sits on the board of directors for Wellpoint, one of the largest health care companies in the U.S. And they were one of his largest contributors...the next day the guy has the cajones to recant and say he won't oppose the public option after all......sleazy jerk.
Heck, I'd vote for a Bugs Bunny if he just came out and said, "Look, I'm running for Sheriff because I want to be sheriff. I've wanted to be sheriff since I was a kid. I've aimed my whole life at becoming sheriff. I joined the department, started at the bottom, busted my butt working hard to move up through the ranks, made some mistakes, learned my lessons the hard way and the knowledge and experience has stuck...I don't want to be sheriff for any other reason than I want to make a difference and I think I can. I don't want any major campaign contributors, just small donations from people who know me and think I will make a fair and honest, hard working sheriff."
But wait, I'm talking about Chuck Mayfield.......guess I'm going to vote for him.

Sophie'schoice hit the nail square on the head. Be very aware of who you vote for. The best advice I can give is GO AND VOTE.

Mojo, I agree with everything you're saying but I want the other stories to be told. The undecided should know the whole story before making their decisions. This is a very important election because its an important position. Not only is it for 2 years, it will probably be the future of Adams County. Don't look at someone because they are"nice" or kin to you, look at them because they are qualified and have the know how to run the whole department. From being able to represent Adams County in public forums to talking to just average Joe. The person elected should be someone we can be proud of to be our Sheriff.

welcometothejungle---
I'm with ya......this is an important election...certainly important enough that more than 6000 of the 22,000 registered voters in Adams county need to vote! Pitiful turn-out on election day is why we get strapped with some of the jugheads we have running things now........
So what do we have...we have one guy who wants to be sheriff because his cousin's husband was sheriff, and he was one of his deputies, but he seems afraid to show up. We have another guy wants to be sheriff because he's been a deputy for a long time, a good one; he's a good man and would probably make a good sheriff, but he doesn't like dealing with the BS side of the job. We have another guy running for I don't know why, other than he wants to fix his own DUI ticket.
.......to be continued--

---page 2 -- the rest of the story--
Who else? Oh yeah, we have a college grad..BS, and MA. He was a deputy, twisted his ankle or something playing basketball or something, then tried to fraudulently steal money from our tax dollars by claiming worker's compensation, and when his boss did the right thing and refused to go along, he quit, and went back to school. His Daddy gave big bucks to the campaign of our last sheriff, and abracadabra, our fraudulent quitter is back on the payroll as a "Major". He's running for sheriff for all the right reasons he says, but there's something about him...I don't know, when he was speaking, it was more like he was acting a part, and not being himself, and I just get the feeling it's more of an ego thing...he wants to be the SHERIFF, the big bad boy with all the toys and the power. His backing comes from a few of the wealthiest families in town. And there is nothing wrong with that at all, absolutely nothing. But it does separate him from the largest part of our population in the county, and it puts him in that "Silver Spoon" position of whose priorities come first, the few rich folks or the rest of us.
This brings us to the other guy...who, by the way, was the guy who got sacked by the newly elected sheriff to make room for the guy I was just talking about. It had nothing to do with job performance. It was totally political, bought and paid for...somebody had to go, so why not the highest ranking guy around that was not supporting the sheriff that eventually got elected. Anyway, this guy takes his experience, his knowledge of community, and his skill and applies them to the best possible thing he can find...our youth court. Great choice for the youth of our city, because this guy really cares about people, and wants to help. He does such a good job he moves up and becomes, along with his youth court duties, the director of the abstinence program. Helping young people make the right decisions, and helping the ones that didn't get their lives going. Now he's running for sheriff with the backing and support of a lot of people just like him...and me for that matter, regular citizens. Not the rich folk up on the hill, but for "we the people". When he speaks, he's humble, not arrogant, he looks you in the eye with an honesty that says, "this is who I am, like it or not", his eyes are n't always moving from one thing to another; he has a genuiness about him that makes him trustworthy; he has that God-given gift that makes people want to work for him, to work with him. He's that "aw, shucks" kind of guy with that under lying current of smooth confidence that lets you know, he WILL get the job done.
Yep, Chuck Mayfield is the guy I'm voting for and Adams County would be well served and well advised to do the same...............

Thanks Mojo. That is a tad more detailed than the information I have heard to date. Thanks for filling in the blanks. I had thought that Chuck somehow got stabbed in the back and it sounds like it was true. Its amazing how decent and clean he has run his campaign, considering. I'm really proud to see how much support he has.

That's how Chuck is.....honest, hardworking, and dedicated to the people he serves. What more could you ask for in your sheriff? When he could have run a not so clean race his has been impeccably clean. I am ready for leadership I can trust in a world that is becoming increasably concerning.
