City: Accounting software update needed

Published Saturday, October 31, 2009

NATCHEZ — The City of Natchez is updating its accounting software — an upgrade City Clerk Donnie Holloway says is long overdue.

For more than 20 years, the city has used an in-house accounting program developed by City Data Processor Gary Valentine. Holloway is traveling to Ridgeland next week for a demonstration of the city’s accounting system.

“They’ve got a real good system from what I’ve been told,” Holloway said of Ridgeland. “Ridgeland is really the only city I’m interested in. We need to go ahead and get a change.”

Holloway said Ridgeland uses INCODE software, which develops programs and computer systems for local governments.

Holloway said the city has been written up for its antiquated software during city audits for the past several years. The INCODE software will allow Holloway as well as department heads to enter account information faster and easier.

“We’re wanting to see if we can maybe cut down on a lot of the paperwork,” Holloway said. “Instead of sending a ton of paperwork up here (to City Hall), (department heads) can do it at their place.

“(The software) will really allow everybody to be familiar with the system, people can be cross-trained on it, and it’ll be a lot easier during audit time.”

Holloway estimates the software installation will cost the city $45,000 to $60,000. He expects the software to be installed some time next year.

“Hopefully we can get this installed, and you well know the money situation at the present time,” Holloway said. “We had this in the budget the last three years, but we haven’t been able to afford it.”

“However, (the software) is a necessity because of the accounting changes made over the last four years.”

Holloway said the city also looked at Biloxi’s accounting software, but “Biloxi has a system that’s pretty much out of our price range.”

A new system so that they can more efficiently waste taxpayer money.

If it were the same system as the county, then consolidation would be easier.

Great addition. With this new system maybe Donnie will nolonger misplace CD's and take weeks to find them. It is so embarrassing when you can not find $500,000.

While it won't cure the financial problems the city has had over the past years, updated software would provide the city government with the ability to function more efficiently and effectively.

go for it!

Not a bad price, really.
