Kim Bain of Alabaster made history Saturday by taking the Women's Bassmaster Tour Championship, thus securing a spot in the Bassmaster Classic Feb. 20-22 on the Red River near Shreveport-Bossier City, La.
Bain, 28, will be the first woman to compete in the Classic in the tournament's 39-year history.

The Piney Woods Festival was held Saturday at Veterans Park. The festival is held every year as an annual fundraiser for the Albert L. Scott Library. This year's festival included arts, crafts, vendors, a book sale, live music, inflatables, pony rides, gymnastic demonstrations and an exotic animal demonstration.

Alabaster Police and Fire responded to a suspicious briefcase Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Best Buy in the Colonial Promenade South. Hoover Police and Shelby County Sheriff's deputies were also on the scene, and the briefcase was blown up by a bomb squad at 6:30 p.m.

Flags representing the United States, and six branches of the military — the Marine Corps, Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines — were raised and granite monuments will soon be placed in front of the poles. The memorial also features bricks engraved with former soldiers' names, and more are available for purchase.
